5 Questions with Mrs. Tien

Where did you go to school/ currently going to school?

“I studied at CMU.” 

What made you want to become a teacher?

“I had teachers who helped me through challenging times and inspired me to grow and create. I wanted to impact others in a similar way.” 

What is your favorite part about being a teacher at Maple Valley?

“I love my students!” 

How would you describe your teaching style?

“I am creative and non-traditional. I love changing what I do from year-to-year and day-to-day to meet the needs of my students.” 

What do you feel is the most challenging part of becoming a teacher?

“I feel that no one warns you how much extra time teachers spend. Sometimes, I have to pick school over my own family to ensure everything gets done.”

Seniors of the Week

Meet Hayden Bassett! After high school, Hayden plans to attend Ferris State University. The teacher who had the biggest impact on Hayden’s life has been Mrs. Deo because her class is “supa swag”. Hayden’s favorite part of being a senior has been the senior skip days. Some advice Hayden would give to incoming freshmen is even if you’re not ready for the day it cannot always be night. The Highlight of Hayden’s senior year has been the DECA Orlando trip.

Meet Ryan Finkler! After high school, Ryan plans to pursue a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering at Kettering University. The teacher who has had the biggest impact on Ryan’s life has been Mrs. Deo because she taught him real-life skills and provided great travel opportunities through DECA. Ryan’s favorite part of being a senior has been understanding all the work. Some advice Ryan would give to incoming freshmen is to try new things, prioritize their time, and be smart. The highlight of Ryan’s senior year has been his LCC engineering/manufacturing class.

Meet Matthew Morris! Matthew’s plans after high school are to get a CDL and drive a truck. The teacher who had the biggest impact on Matthew’s life has been Mr. Raddle because he teaches a lot of useful mechanical tools. Matthew’s favorite part about being a senior has been learning about construction equipment. Some advice Matthew would give to incoming freshmen is to learn time management quickly. The highlight of Matthew’s senior year has been doing a job shadow with a truck driver.
