LIFTED - Eaton County Shelter in Place

We have lifted the shelter in place after being notified that the person of interest has been apprehended. Thank you for remaining calm as we worked to maintain normalcy for our students. Throughout this morning we were in constant communication with our police contacts and received updates as we developed plans to protect and serve our students. While there was no danger to our students, this is a good time to review our emergency communications processes so you can be refreshed on how we work to keep you informed. We thank our law enforcement partners and staff for working to keep our students in a safe and normal space. While we do not have details about the individual who was apprehended by the police, we do know all of our protocols were followed. I wish you all a peaceful day and encourage you to reference our talking guide on our website for reassuring conversations with your children this evening.

Out of an abundance of safety for our students and staff, Maplewood Elementary School will be in a Shelter in Place as well. Updates will continue to be posted here per our Safety Notification Communications Plan (found on the Family Resources page of our website) as information is available to us from both the Michigan State Police and the Eaton County Sheriff's Department.

We are in communications with the police and the families in that area impacted by this. Our school day will proceed safely as normal with some delays in bus transportation and drop-offs.

ATTENTION: Residents in the area of W. Vermontville Hwy near Bradley Rd in Vermontville should shelter in place while Michigan State Police search the area for a subject. Please see the attached graphic for instructions on sheltering in place. Subject is a white male possibly wearing a black coat and jeans, Call 911 if you see this subject.
