March 20 - 26, 2026

3rd - 6th Grade Reproductive Health

Reproductive health lessons and opt-out forms are available for review.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Starting March 20th, your student will begin the Maple Valley Puberty and Sex Education unit in their class. We will be teaching a curriculum specifically designed for our community in accordance with the wishes of our community. The curriculum is medically accurate, meets the laws and guidelines of the State of Michigan, and teaches about respectful communication, healthy relationships, as well as information about the prevention of sexual abuse, puberty, the reproductive system, and pregnancy in an age-appropriate manner.

Our curriculum respects the values of our families and community. When students ask about puberty, teachers will answer questions in a medically and age-appropriate manner, as related in the adopted curriculum, and will help students to identify supportive adults in their lives. When students ask questions about consent and respect, teachers will share communication principles about bodily autonomy.

You are welcome to examine the lessons and curriculum by following this link or by arranging an appointment with the Maplewood office staff to examine the printed curriculum for your child’s grade level. If you have any questions about the curriculum, either the office staff or Mr. Harvey would be happy to answer any questions you have. Please feel free to call the office or email us directly.

If, after examining the curriculum, you would like to opt your child out of the lessons, please indicate which lessons you’d like your child removed from, and we will remove your student. Please return the opt-out form by March 17, 2026, to your child’s classroom teacher. If you’d like your child to participate in all of the lessons, no further action is required.

Warm regards,
Trent Harvey
